XCOM 2 is Firaxis Games' turn-based tactical strategy game set in a future where aliens have taken over Earth. Set after the first XCOM's lost war, the story requires players to use guerrilla tactics as a covert resistance movement against the alien-occupying ADVENT — they're now on the offensive rather than playing defense. Procedurally generated maps, escalating difficulty over time (mission time limits), and the high-stakes design where soldiers can permanently die (permadeath) make the game intensely tense and strategic. The War of the Chosen expansion further enriched the game with additional enemy types and deepened story content.
