PC Maintenance Guide: Dust Cleaning, Thermal Paste, and Cable Management

If a PC feels like it's "slowing down" over time, the real culprit is often accumulated dust, not software. Dust blocks airflow, raises temperatures, and causes the GPU/CPU to enter a self-protective slowdown called thermal throttling. The good news: regular maintenance is free and takes about half an hour.

How often should you do maintenance?

As a general rule, dust cleaning every 6 months is enough for an average home/office environment without pets. If you have pets or a particularly dusty environment, do it every 3 months instead. Thermal paste, on the other hand, typically only needs replacing every 2-3 years.

1. What you need for dust cleaning

  • A can of compressed air — the most practical and safe method
  • A soft brush (even a makeup brush works)
  • A microfiber cloth, ideally
  • (Optional) A vacuum cleaner — only for cleaning the outside of the case, NEVER apply it directly to internal components, as it carries a static-electricity risk

2. Dust cleaning steps

  1. Turn off the PC and unplug it. Always, for safety.
  2. Open the case in an open area, ideally outdoors or somewhere well-ventilated — dust will fly everywhere.
  3. Hold the fan blades still with your hand while blasting them with compressed air — the airflow can spin the fan much faster than it's rated for and damage the bearing.
  4. Carefully clean the GPU's fans and radiator fins — this is where the most dust accumulates.
  5. Remove dust filters and wash them separately (if present) — most modern cases have removable filters on the front/bottom.
  6. Make sure everything is fully dry before closing the case back up.

3. When should you reapply thermal paste?

Warning signs include: high idle CPU temperatures, more heat than expected during gaming, or performance drops caused by thermal throttling. If your system is more than 2-3 years old and temperatures are running high, the paste may have dried out and lost effectiveness.

4. Steps to reapply thermal paste

  1. Carefully remove the CPU cooler (the method varies by the motherboard's mounting mechanism).
  2. Clean the old paste off both the CPU surface and the cooler base using isopropyl alcohol (ideally 90%+) and a lint-free cloth.
  3. Apply a pea-sized dot of new paste to the center of the CPU — the cooler's pressure will spread it evenly, so you don't need to spread it manually (check the manufacturer's guidance for some cooler shapes).
  4. Reinstall the cooler, tightening the screws evenly in a crisscross pattern (don't fully tighten one corner before moving to the next).

5. Why does cable management matter?

Messy cables aren't just a looks issue — they can physically block airflow inside the case and raise temperatures. Routing cables behind the motherboard tray (most modern cases have space for this) and bundling them with velcro straps both improves ventilation and makes future maintenance easier.

Does maintenance actually make a difference?

Yes — especially on a dusty, long-neglected system, you can see temperature drops of up to 10-15°C, resulting in less throttling and more stable FPS.
